World Tobacco Day

Reason

Result

May 31, is being observed as World Tobacco Day. The Tamil Nadu Traders Association has decided not to sell tobacco on the day. Statistics have recently shown that 57% of male population and 10.9% of female population consume tobacco in different forms.

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has granted $ 5 milliom to the PHFI - Public Health Foundation of India - to help the 3 year programme (2009-2012), National Tobacco Control Programme, in Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh. The help will be provided to the much needed districts where new addicts are growing rapidly. The district where there is the most need are Anand, Banaskantha, Kheda and Surat in Gujarat and East Godavari, Mahboobnagar, Kurnool in Andhra Pradesh.

But the giant tobacco producers and poor villagers who want something to pass time will definitely make the mission fail.
